‘Wash and Squash’ Scheme Helps to Reduce Mont Cuet Landfill

Guernsey News, 24 November 2009 – HSBC in Guernsey would like to thank the island’s community for its tremendous response to the Public Services Department’s ‘Wash and Squash’ scheme, which has recycled 100 tonnes of beverage cartons.

Launched in October 2008 as a joint initiative between the public and private sectors, the local offices of HSBC Bank Plc, HSBC Securities Services (Guernsey) Limited (‘HSSG’), and HSBC Private Bank (‘HPB’) agreed to contribute £40,000 to the cost of collection and shipping over a two-year period.

Brenda Petsche, Director, HSSG commented: “The ‘Wash and Squash’ scheme is one of great importance for Guernsey. The treatment of the island’s waste is a pressing matter and the ‘Wash & Squash’ scheme really sets out to address
this. Our three companies at HSBC are committed to environmental sustainability and are therefore delighted to support an initiative to reduce waste being sent to Mont Cuet.”

The reduction in beverage cartons going to landfill exceeded Public Services’ target for the first year.

Public Services recycling officer Tina Norman-Ross said: “The response by the public has been excellent. We are very grateful to HSBC for their generous contribution. Their assistance has ensured the scheme has run smoothly and can continue to do so. Our objective for the coming year is to improve on these already impressive figures.”

Earlier this year the three HSBC businesses, in partnership with Guernsey Dairy, launched a new website, http://www.washandsquash.co.uk, to help drive forward carton recycling in the island and raise awareness of the campaign. In
addition HSBC also undertakes fundraising projects throughout the year for other local charities, including the Guernsey Blind Association, and run an annual community project scheme locally.
