Accomplished art lecturer to give talk to students

Guernsey News, 26 February 2010 – World-renowned art historian and novelist Douglas Skeggs will be giving a lecture to Year 10 and Year 11 Grammar School students on Picasso ‘The Great Magician’ while he is visiting Guernsey next week.

Both Year groups are studying Picasso and Cubism as part of their GCSE Art and Design examinations.

Douglas will be in the island to give his eighth Art Fund Illustrated lecture at St James Concert and Assembly Hall on Monday 1 March, sponsored by Investec. The lecture will bring to life the work of David Hockney, regarded as ‘The Old Master of the Modern World’.

An artist in his own right, Douglas has kindly offered to follow his evening lecture by imparting his knowledge to the students on Tuesday 2 March. He will talk about Picasso’s early career from his childhood in Spain to the backstreets of Paris.

It was as a child that Picasso’s unique talent was first recognised. Later the poetic and wistful images of his Blue Period were transformed into the daring experiments with form and structure that became known as cubism.

Investec Bank managing director Steve Henry said, “We are thrilled that Douglas has offered his time to provide an educational lecture to GCSE Art and Design students at the Guernsey Grammar School.”

“Picasso is one of the most famous and controversial figures of the 20th century, even today his work triggers mixed and often emotional reactions from art lovers. We hope that Douglas’s talk will provide valuable experience for the students.”

The next Art Fund lecture will take place on Monday 26 April at St James Concert and Assembly Hall from 7pm and is entitled ‘Crack Codes: Botticelli and Bletchley Park’.
