There is still time for golfing enthusiasts to sign up for the “Drive to St Andrews” charity golf drive organised by local architectural design practice PF+A in aid of Home-Start Guernsey.

Although the competition will challenge teams of golfers to hit a combined distance of 1,000km (621 miles) – the equivalent distance from Guernsey to the famous home of golf in St Andrews, Scotland – organisers will also be setting up a guest bay within the driving range for amateur golfers to come along and hit a few balls and make a donation to Home-Start.

The event, taking place on Sunday 24 August, will now begin at 8am (opposed to the original 6am start) at the driving range of the Royal Guernsey Golf Club. This will be followed by a prize giving at around 4pm.

John Hibbs, director of strategy at PF+A who came up with the original idea, is urging amateur golfers who don’t want to participate in the whole challenge to come up to the range and hit a few balls for Home-Start.

“After a practise run through we have made the event later so that people don’t have to get up quite as early to participate. We are also keen to make people aware that they don’t have to partake in the whole challenge; they can come along, see how we’re getting on and join in with our guest bay. Of course if anyone wants to do the whole challenge, we are still welcoming entrants.”

For those who still want to enter a full team, there should be a minimum of four people per team (with unlimited maximum numbers) who will take it in turns throughout the day to complete the distance.

The challenge will focus on the number of balls hit rather than how far each ball travels.  The first team to hit their quota of exactly 3,589 balls over 100 yards per drive will be the winner of the inaugural “Drive to St Andrews” challenge.

Jurat Margaret Spaargaren, chair of Home-Start Guernsey, will be at the range throughout the day to cheer on the teams and answer any questions that anyone might have about the charity.

“Our thanks go to the Royal Guernsey Golf Club who will be providing us with their driving range for the day to raise as much money for Home-Start as possible as well as to test out how long it really takes to ‘drive’ to the home of golf.”

Entry for a team is £25 per person, or more information about the event, to register a team and to download sponsorship forms log on to the Facebook page: or contact John Hibbs via
