Two Guernsey men, Philip Smith and Warren Mauger, are running 7 Marathons in 7 Days to raise money for Guernsey-based charities This Is EPIC and The HUB. The week-long challenge will see Philip and Warren take on 183.4 miles, all of which will be run in Guernsey.

The first marathon takes place on Monday 18th August with marathon number seven being the Guernsey Waterfont Marathon on Sunday 24th August.

“It is going to be a very tough challenge, beyond anything we thought we could achieve, but training is going well and we have been so encouraged by the support we have received. People are getting involved with the challenge and are running the final marathon with us or shorter distances during the week,” said Warren.

The money raised is being shared across the two charities and will have a significant positive impact on lives in both Guernsey and Africa.

“Seven marathons in seven days is quite a challenge, but the positive impact on lives the money we raise will have is well worth the hard work and effort. If we hit the fundraising target we will be able to impact the lives of approximately 3000 people with our projects in Africa,” said Philip, one of the founders and directors of This Is EPIC.

This Is EPIC helps individuals, families and communities in Africa to overcome poverty by providing access to informal financial services through Village Savings and Loans projects. The projects enable people to save and loan money and empower them to invest in their own income-generating activities, helping them to develop a more prosperous and sustainable future.

The HUB provides free information, advice and emotional listening support for 11 to 16 year olds in Guernsey. The Barnardo’s trained HUB team support young people at their centre on Le Bordage or through outreach in the island’s schools, youth clubs or open spaces. They provide help on anything and everything that’s going on in a young person’s life.

“We are so privileged to be benefitting from this quite extraordinary fundraising challenge, and have such admiration – and gratitude – for the grueling week that Philip and Warren are undertaking,” said Jane St. Pier from The HUB team.
“Since opening the service in 2012, the HUB team has worked with over 1,000 young teens; changing lives and changing futures. Our annual running costs are £120,000 pa and so the funding donated from the marathons will be crucial to our continued viability. We are also humbled to be a recipient in partnership with This Is EPIC; a charity that is also committed to having the maximum impact on changing lives.”
