Aslett takes slim lead after race two of Mercator Frostbite Series

On a day that lived up to the name Frostbite, 12 boats took to the water last Sunday (20 January) to compete in race two of the Mercator sponsored series.

As sailors made their way to the course area set as windward leeward within Belgrave Bay; they were greeted by gentle sleet in the chilly light force two to three breeze.

At the start, on a tightly laid line, the bulk of the competing boats jockeyed for position at the committee boat end while Henrik Asplund and Steve Rickards got away well into clear airs at the pin end.  These positions were held until the windward mark rounding after which the faster asymmetric boats started to pull away.

In the full rig Lasers, Asplund, Darragh Lee and Dave Aslett maintained a close and constant battle for position while Keith Le Page and Sam Crosby in Radials pushed hard to challenge the faster Johanna Asplund.

Favoured by the course and lighter winds on handicap it was again a Laser day with first, second and third taken by Asplund Snr, Lee and Aslett.  After two races their series positions are reversed with only two points splitting the top three.

It was good to see three juniors new to Laser sailing braving the cold; Tom Lees, Phoebe Lewis and Ellie Guy battling it out in their 4.7s.  Lees claimed a victory in this class.

So far 17 boats have taken part in the two races; a testament to the hardiness of the Guernsey dinghy sailors.

Race 2 Results

The series includes a total of seven races and the winner is determined by the amalgamation of points accumulated across each of the races against handicap.

The schedule for this year’s Mercator Frostbite Series each starting at 10 am is:
