Gusty conditions and a forecast of increasing wind greeted the twelve competitors for Race three of the Mercator Frostbite Series last Sunday.
The windward leeward course laid close in shore within Belgrave Bay, kept the boats out of the tide but presented challenges with strong wind shifts close to the windward mark.
At the start, on a very tight line in an increasing wind, some boats struggled to clear the line while the lasers broke away chased by the Finn of Cooper and the RS 400 of Le Page.
The challenging winds forced the early retirement of the RS800 and the Finn, and induced spectacular capsizes from many in the fleet.
Sam Van de Velde toppled his Laser at the leeward mark rolling the boat completely before righting and carrying on ahead of the chasing Crosby. The crews in both the RS400 and the RS300 also enjoyed a swim in the chilled waters of the Little Russell.
Exciting and challenging conditions saw Asplund gain his second win in this series, 12 seconds ahead of Aslett, with a very creditable and hard fought third for the first junior, Sam Van de Velde.
