A series of paintings created by service users of Europe’s largest Cancer Hospital, The Christie Hospital in the UK, will be exhibited at the PEH from Thursday 29 May. The exhibition coincides with the launch of a pilot project delivering gentle art activities to patients while they undergo Chemotherapy at the PEH. Lottie Barnes, GAC’s Community Arts Development Manager and Arts Coordinator HSSD, is working in partnership with Patricia Mountford, the ‘Artist in Residence’ at The Christie Hospital, to help develop Art in Health projects in Guernsey.
Lottie Barnes from Guernsey Arts Commission said:
“I visited Patricia’s art class a number of times and was so impressed with what she’s developed and the impact it is having on the lives of service users. It was clear to see that the class offered an escape from the rigmarole of cancer treatment, a positive distraction, helping to give back control of individuals’ lives and rebuilding their confidence. I am so grateful to Patricia for kindly volunteering her time and experience to help support GAC and the HSSD to use the arts within the oncology department. I am delighted that we will be exhibiting some of the paintings created in Patricia’s class and I hope it will inspire and demonstrate what can be achieved through Arts in Health projects.”
Patricia Mountford is a visual Artist from Manchester. Alongside her residency she is also the ‘Gallery Educator’ at Manchester City Art Gallery, working in schools all over the North West of England. She has delivered art projects within Special Needs schools and worked with the homeless for several years. Patricia works with patients, carers, volunteers, staff, teachers and children using art to increase skills, motivation, confidence and self-esteem, and to educate and inspire.
Patricia Mountford added:
“I am really looking forward to visiting Guernsey, working with the GAC team and supporting this initiative. The service users and I are so happy to share our art work with the PEH and help demonstrate what can be achieved by using the arts in a healthcare setting.”
