Business women join forces with local D of E group

Isle News, 4 September 2009 – A LOCAL Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) initiative supported by business women, is to be launched at a reception hosted by Intertrust next Tuesday.

A group of successful business women in Guernsey are planning to help give young people a head start in the current economic downturn, particularly with more competition for education and training and fewer jobs available.

The reception, held at Intertrust’s offices in Martello Court, on Tuesday September 8 at 6 p.m. will also be attended by Lady Malbon.

Behind this initiative is local businesswomen, Anne Curr and Lynn Rix, of Anne Curr Design Ltd who feel passionate about trying to helping young people on the Island and asked some of their friends and clients to get involved too.

Mrs Curr heard about the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at a reception hosted by Sir Fabian and Lady Malbon last year.

‘I really believe that young people need access to opportunities that can help them develop skills, self confidence and give them a positive outlook on life,’ she said.

‘I realised what a great opportunity it was for young people and that I have the skills to help in some way.’

The DofE in the UK has a “Women in Business” initiative that raises funds for the programme and Mrs Curr decided to set up a similar local group.

Fran Snoding, Director at Intertrust Guernsey was very eager to support this initiative.

‘Like all employers we recognise the value of the DofE when recruiting.  Young people learn values such as teamwork and leadership which are useful for every workplace,’ he said.

Also attending the reception is Claire Cathcart, DofE manager on the Island and some colleagues from London, a Local Award Leader and Gold Award participant.  Here they will outline the benefits of the programme, the challenges faced by young people in the Bailiwick and the resources needed to get more young people involved.

Lady Malbon is due to attend the reception. Her husband Sir Fabian Malbon is himself a Gold Award holder and a keen supporter of the programme.
