MORE than 100 young musicians performed to a packed audience for the Guernsey Music Centre Winter Concert at St James, sponsored by Butterfield Bank.

The annual concert, which features the Guernsey Music Centre’s Youth Orchestra, Youth Choir and Concert Wind Band, took place on Saturday 2 February.

The Youth Orchestra began the concert with an excerpt from Also Sprach Zarathustra by Richard Strauss, familiar to most of the audience as the music that accompanied the television coverage of the Apollo Mission, as well as Finlandia by Sibelius and excerpts from Elgar’s Enigma Variations.

The Youth Choir followed, moving seamlessly from Mozart’s Ave Verum Corpus to Andrew Carter’s Teddy Bears’ Picnic.

The Concert Wind Band then performed their programme which included a West Side Story Selection and finished with Seventy-Six Trombones by Meredith Willson with help from some members of the audience who were drawn in as extra instrumentalists.

The concert is sponsored annually by Butterfield which is celebrating 40 years in Guernsey this year.

“The students and staff of Music Service are very grateful to Butterfield for their long term sponsorship of our winter concerts as it enables our young musicians to perform in the Island’s main concert hall and encourages students to give their very best,” said Mervyn Grand, Head of Service at the Guernsey Music Centre.

John Robinson, Managing Director of Butterfield in Guernsey said: “We’re pleased to support the island’s young musicians and the Guernsey Music Centre through the sponsorship of their annual Winter Concert which provides an ideal opportunity for these talented musicians to perform to a large audience.”

“The repertoire of classical music performed is always extremely impressive and it’s a fantastic opportunity for these young musicians to put all their hard-work and practice into a concert hall performance.”
