SIX teams from Guernsey, Jersey and the UK have competed in the first annual Butterfield Racketball Festival.
The Donkey Devils, comprised of Captain Chris Bourgaize, Mark Roberts, Mike Hopkins, Paul Garlick, Mark Stenner and Nigel Stewart, walked away with the trophy after an intense tournament.
The 36 players enjoyed more than 70 matches during the two day event which ended with a local team as the victors. The other teams, Jersey Jaguars, Mahy’s Maulers, N.F.C, Revolution and Abbington Squash Club, put in some great performances but did not do enough to defeat the Donkey Devils.
The match of the tournament was played between Adam Shields of Mahy’s Maulers and Donkey Devils’ Mike Hopkins. Both players were on top form making for a tense match that had spectators on the edge of their seats, with Hopkins emerging victorious.
Mick Mahy, organiser of the event, hopes the festival will grow.
‘The weekend was fantastic and we have seen some impressive racketball. It was particularly good to see teams attending from outside Guernsey. I am hopeful that in future we will be able to attract more teams from further afield and make this a permanent fixture in the local sporting calendar,’ he said.
Final results: 1.Donkey Devils, 2.Jersey Jaguars, 3.Mahy’s Maulers, 4.N.F.C, 5.Revolution, 6.Abbington Squash Club.
