£23,620 was awarded to the charitable sector in the latest round of the Foundation’s Grants Programme, which is now moving into a new phase, with a specific focus on ‘Strategic Initiatives’.
The Guernsey & Alderney Child Contact Service received £7,500 towards rent and staffing costs. This organisation offers an independent, specialised and unique service to children by facilitating contact between children, non-resident parents and extended family members, following relationship breakdown, and or legal proceedings. Following an increase in the need for these services, the funds will enable the organisation to offer more contact visits, some of which will be on an outreach basis, for example at the Guernsey Prison.
Every Child Our Future was awarded £4,000 to fund the license for an on-island training programme for Reading Recovery. This will mean that there will be a total of seven local teachers who are now trained in this programme, which will provide intensive literacy intervention to the children that need most support.
£4,620 was given to the Guernsey Sports Commission, towards the running costs of its Street Sports Programme. This will help the Commission to expand this successful programme, which takes sport into the community, reaching out to disengaged groups. Streets Sports offers 11-18 year olds of all abilities free outdoor sports and physical activity sessions in neighbourhoods at three locations in the island.
Thanks to the Foundation’s donation of £7,500 the Guernsey Contraceptive Service will be starting a pilot project to evidence the benefits of outreach work for its services. The Contraceptive Service provides confidential, contraceptive and sexual health advice to men and women of all ages, but especially to young people. The Service currently operates from its premises in Town, but this pilot project will look at the merits of taking this service out into the community so that it is easier for people to use its services.
The Foundation is now welcoming applications from the voluntary sector for its new Strategic Grants Programme. This is an evolution of the Foundation’s previous grant programmes and aims to address significant challenges or needs within the Bailiwick.
Applications for financial support for strategic initiatives will be accepted at any point during the year and should improve the way a voluntary organisation operates or delivers its services so that it can better meet the needs of the community or its beneficiaries. Applications should be for a minimum of £10,000 and examples of areas supported include: formation of strategy; leadership and management; staffing and volunteers; infrastructure; training; effective fundraising; communications; working with other organisations to maximise the use of available resources. Applications will need to demonstrate a measurable impact and should address a proven area of concern, or fill a ‘gap’ in provision.
