Tickets are now on sale for the Guernsey Choral Workshop concert, which takes place on January 11th 2014 at St James’. The highly acclaimed conductor, Malcolm Goldring, will lead singers from across the Bailiwick in this annual arts calendar favourite.
The choir will perform Stabat Mater by Rossini and Mendelssohn’s Psalm 13 in a one-off concert. The Sinfonia Orchestra and four professional soloists – Laurie Ashworth, Emily Bauer-Jones, James Oldfield and Thomas Herford, will accompany the choir. The orchestra will also perform Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony.
The Workshop, which is sponsored by Deutsche Bank, attracts first class choristers from across the Bailiwick. This year’s choir includes 90 singers including four who will travel from Alderney and three from Sark. The singers gathered in November 2013 for an introduction to the music and they will develop and polish their performance under the guidance of Malcolm in the day preceding the concert. Ed Jewell, one of the organisers of the Workshop who is also taking part comments: ‘we are all practising hard and looking forward to the workshop with Malcolm in January before the concert. Bringing such wonderful music to life is an immensely satisfying process and to be able to work with a conductor of Malcolm’s experience is very special for us all. The concert will lift everyone’s spirits in January and I urge music lovers to book now.’
Malcolm describes Rossini’s Stabat Mater as ‘a very exciting and dramatic piece. Audiences love it and the last movement is thrilling – it’s ‘rip the roof off’ music.’ He is also very excited about the visit of Emily Bauer-Jones, who is considered to be one of the world’s finest mezzo-sopranos and is visiting from Australia; she will perform Mendelssohn’s Psalm 13. ‘I promise you a knock out performance from Emily; she draws in the audience and because St James’ is a relatively small venue it will be a very intimate and emotional performance that will be very moving,’ explains Malcolm. The audience will also be treated to Schubert’s “Unfinished” Symphony, making the whole evening a ‘must’ for lovers of classical music.
‘We are delighted to have such a strong choir for the workshop,’ commented Andreas Tautscher, Chief Country Officer for Deutsche Bank in the Channel Islands. ‘The January concert is a great way to kick off the New Year, it’s always an evening to look forward to and we are thrilled that once again we have such fine soloists performing alongside the choir.’
The concert is a highlight of the post Christmas period. In the words of the Musical Director: ‘if you want to be uplifted and leave on a high this evening will really deliver. The music has lots of drama – just the thing for a cold January!’
