ONE LUCKY Green Lion’s fan will soon be the proud owner of a fairtrade football signed by Guernsey Football Club. Local Fairtrade supplier Mondomundi has donated the ball to the Fairtrade Steering Group and it is now up for auction until the end of March.
The initiative coincides with Fairtrade Fortnight, which runs from 25 February until 10 March and involves a number of activities – including a quiz, afternoon tea events and a fair trade food sampling and information bus – aimed at raising both funds and awareness.
Phil Soulsby, managing director of Mondomundi said that they had donated the ball for a number of reasons:
“It is a great and fun way to help raise funds for our local Fairtrade Steering Group but it also highlights the scope of different products available.
“It’s not just bananas. The fair trade product range has really increased in recent years and it is becoming easier than ever to play your part in making a difference and providing a better deal for developing countries.
“The auction is a great way to mark Fairtrade Fortnight and also celebrate the success of local sporting heroes. It would make an ideal, ethical present for any local football fan,” said Mr Soulsby.
Steve Mauger, group secretary of Fairtrade Guernsey, is grateful for the initiative and hopes that the auction will attract attention.
“We’re very thankful to Mondomundi for its continued contribution to the promotion of Fairtrade in Guernsey and the auction is a wonderful gesture. We hope it also helps to increase awareness of what Guernsey has to offer to the Fairtrade movement,” he said.
Andy Richards, communications manager of Guernsey Football Club said:
“It’s good to get behind such a worthwhile initiative and we hope that the successful bidder will be proud to own this memento of Guernsey Football Club’s success.”
The football, which is on display at Mondomundi in the St Martin’s Court Co-Op Complex, will be on auction until the end of March. Silent bids can be placed by emailing email@example.com or via sealed envelope in Mondomundi.
