A NEW drop in service for adults who feel they may have mental health issues will benefit from a £500 donation from Investec’s Charitable Trust.

The L’Vaïr Project is a new Guernsey charity run by people with personal experience of mental health problems. Their aim is to help others to cope and signpost how to get further help if they want it. It is launching a new drop-in service in the centre of town next month and Investec’s donation will be used for it.

‘We are extremely grateful for this donation from Investec, which we will use to fund posters and leaflets to launch our new project,’ said Selina Bichard, secretary of The L’vaïr Project.

The charity already runs a weekly drop-in every Saturday morning from 9.30am to 11.30am at the Lions Mind Centre, Town Arsenal, St Peter Port.

From 7 April the new drop ins will be held at The Samaritans building in Forest Lane and will be open every Monday, from 12.00 to 2.00pm and 4.00 to 6.00pm.

‘The Saturday morning drop ins are mostly attended by existing mental health service users,’ explained Ms Bichard.

‘Our new drop-ins are specifically aimed at people who feel they might want help to cope with being over-stressed or depressed, but aren’t sure how to get it. We provide an opportunity to talk in confidence to someone who understands what they are going through.’

Paula Robinson from Investec Charitable Trust said the committee was impressed by the commitment of the new charity, which she said provided a valuable service to a number of islanders who would otherwise suffer in silence.

‘We were surprised to learn that more than one in four islanders experiences mental health problems at some stage. Having a sympathetic listener to talk to can be the first step to recovery and this is what the L’vaïr Project provides,’ she said.

‘Investec Charitable Trust wishes them all the best with their new drop-in sessions and we hope that our donation will help them to spread the word to people who work in Town.’
