Following the success of last year’s hard fought inaugural competition, teams from Jersey and Guernsey will be doing battle again this year over mixing bowls and cutting boards to secure the prize of being the top culinary Island.
The competition, taking place on October 21 and 22, is being staged by the Craft Guild of Chefs in Jersey and Guernsey and involves two teams pitting their cheffing skills against one another. Each team will be led by a captain and made up from some of the best chefs at work in the Islands today. At least one member of the team will be a student reflecting the Craft Guild’s focus on promoting new talent within the profession.
The Island teams will have their own day to impress the judges. Over the course of that day they will be required to create a five course meal, with canapés, all from a mystery basket of products provided by some of the Island’s premier food producers and suppliers.
The teams have just one week to prepare a winning presentation from the mystery basket and only 24 hours to create an eye catching and taste-bud startling menu. Once that menu is agreed there is no way back and the teams must stick to their plans.
The trophy for all their efforts was created in honour of Peter Queree, the former head of catering at Highlands College Jersey who passed away last year. Peter was a true culinary great and longstanding Craft Guild of Chefs member who had many links with both Islands.
The competition includes two evening events when the two teams will have to impress a judging panel of top London chefs; Henri Brosi, executive chef at The Dorchester, Paul Gayler, executive chef at the Lanesborough Hotel and Andrew Bennett MBE, who is food and beverages manager as well as executive chef at the Sheraton in Park Lane and 50 discerning diners.
The Craft Guild of Chefs’ Inter Islands Challenge is in the refurbished kitchens at the Academy of Culinary Arts, Highlands College Jersey.
This year’s winning team in the Inter Islands Challenge will be announced at the second dinner on the Tuesday evening, 22 October.
