Latest Microsoft SharePoint technology demonstrates significant productivity benefits to local businesses

Businesses can drastically improve productivity by using technology to automate time-consuming processes, audiences were told at recent breakfast briefings by Channel Islands IT consultancy C5 Alliance.

Full houses of business and technical decision makers at the Royal Yacht Hotel in Jersey and Moores Hotel in Guernsey were informed on how the Microsoft SharePoint platform could be best used to improve these business processes.

SharePoint Lead Consultant at C5 Alliance, Aonghus Fraser was joined by visiting Partner Technology Advisor from Microsoft, Jess Meats to demonstrate the technology and explore the useful changes in the upcoming SharePoint 2013.

Mr Fraser used live demonstrations to show how automation can be applied to a number of business processes. These range from simple to complex including: document approval, holiday requests, customer application and client due diligence (CDD) processes.

“There are significant advantages to creating automated workflows to streamline these types of task. It can reduce costs substantially, increase consistency and efficiency and improve customer service. It can also simplify reporting and management information and optimise normal business processes,” said Mr Fraser.

Mr Fraser focused predominantly on SharePoint 2010 as well as workflow design software SharePoint Designer 2010 and Nintex Workflow 2010, which allow end-users to easily customise and control workflows to meet their requirements. Jess Meats provided an introduction to the upgrade – SharePoint 2013, the Office 365 online version of which launches officially on the 27 February.

“The key word is ‘share’ and SharePoint is all about collaboration. SharePoint 2013 brings a series of key updates to the end-user experience making it more customisable, interactive and easier than ever with features such as ‘drag and drop’.

“Another core aspect is the social element with features such as micro-blogging and discussion forums to share best practices and ease the transfer of knowledge within organisations. It also integrates eDiscovery, allowing companies to respond accurately and efficiently to litigation enquires and is cross-platform compatible,” she said.

Mark Loane, chief executive officer at C5 Alliance, was pleased with the response to the events.

C5 Alliance will be hosting its next events in April, to discuss business intelligence with a focus on new data warehousing software Wherescape RED.
