THREE Guernsey students will be attending the Institute of Directors (IoD) Annual Convention at Royal Albert Hall on 18 September, where they will hear from renowned business leaders, including Sir Richard Branson.
The post A-level students – Jake Delbridge, Jonathan Spicer and Lydia Collas – earned the all-expense-paid trip by winning the Ana Leaf Foundation’s 2012-2013 ‘Directors of Tomorrow’ competition.
The competition, now in its fourth year, began last October with the Guernsey Institute of Directors annual debate, which examined the future of Guernsey and its place on the global business stage.
Ten local students, selected by teachers for their interest in current affairs, attended the event and recorded their experiences in blogs, with the authors of the three best awarded this opportunity.
The full-day convention will showcase a high-calibre line-up of inspirational entrepreneurs and public figures, including: Sir Richard Branson, Founder of Virgin Group; Boris Johnson, Mayor of London; George Osborne, Chancellor of the Exchequer; and Matt Brittin, Vice President of Google.
The speakers will cover a range of themes from the inspirational to the informative debating hot topics, UK business trends and the challenges of leadership.
Hayley de Putron, trustee of the Ana Leaf Foundation hopes the students find the event motivational and enlightening.
‘All three students have shown passion, drive and maturity of thought; apt characteristics for our future leaders. The Directors of Tomorrow initiative aims to nurture this talent and I hope that the IoD Annual Convention is a rewarding and inspirational experience for them,’ she said.
Along with the spoken content, the event also provides an opportunity for delegates to network with over 2000 of the UK’s successful business leaders.
Mark Palfrey, chairman of the Guernsey Institute of Directors is looking forward to accompanying the students on the trip.
‘The students showed an impressive understanding of the local debate and it is a pleasure to be a part of the initiative. Rubbing shoulders with some of the top names in business will be an invaluable experience for them, as they continue on their journeys towards becoming the next generation of leaders and influencers,’ he said.
