The Witch will be shown at the exhibition at the greenhouse

A discovery of Past Photographs taken by Gruts’ photographers at the greenhouse Co-Curator Liesja Grut.

In this fascinating exhibition at the greenhouse there’s a chance to trigger some memories and see some amazing images of Guernsey in days gone by!

The exhibition includes images of the Fermain boat, the Herm & Jethou boat the Martha Gunn, the Sunderland sea plane pictured unusually in the Careening Hard (it was carrying a football team to Guernsey when it sank in the harbour), beachgoers enjoying the sunshine at Moulin Huet and the ‘Witch of Sark’ to name a few. This is the first time some of these images have been on public view (some had been made into postcards previously) the original plates (which were recently discovered in a loft) have never been on public view and the images taken from the plates will be wall size printouts. We’re hoping, on this scale, locals will have a chance to identify some of the people!

The images which range from the late 1800’s through to the 1950’s include the work of Thomas Alfred Grut, founder of T A Gruts’ Photographic Studio, his son Norman Grut and other Gruts’ photographers and along with the help of Mike Deane and his photographic archive this promises to be a fascinating exhibition.

Thomas Alfred Grut’s great- great granddaughter Liesja Grut who has co-curated the Etched in Memory exhibition says:
“I’m very excited by the numerous technological possibilities that have enabled us to recreate my ancestors’ striking images in high quality, on a large scale to showcase our cultural heritage in Guernsey. I am also very grateful to Joanna Littlejohns and her team at the Guernsey Arts Commission for making this vision possible and excited to host the exhibition in the GAC’s fantastic gallery space the greenhouse, which is only a stone’s throw away from the original Grut’s building…”

  1. Patricia A Cunningham says:

Congratulations to Liesja Grut for co-curating this “Etched in Memories” Exhibition of our great grandfather – Thomas Grut’s photographes. It sounds very exciting and We, the 15-10 family members from Canada, England and New Zealand would love to see it but Our Family Reunion in Guernsey will not be until May 10 so we will miss it by a month. Our grandmother Elsie Hunkin(nee Grut) used to help in the Photographic Shop before she was married. Best Wishes and may it be a huge success.
    Sincerely, Pat Cunningham
