A NEW sponsor for a charity walk and run around Alderney will enable more money to be raised for the island’s new swimming pool and gym.
The long-standing plans to build a community swimming pool and gym at St Anne’s School are close to fruition with more than £500,000 already raised and an additional £75,000 now needed to enhance the project with a disabled hoist, additional storage, better car parking and increased solar panels and insulation to reduce running costs.
‘The Sure Coast Race, as it will now be known, is a popular walk or run around the island and we’re delighted that Sure has agreed to be the main sponsor as this will enable us to raise more money for the new swimming pool and gym,’ said organiser Rod Paris.
‘We have a different beneficiary each year and try to choose something that will benefit as many islanders as possible. With Sure’s support, we hope that we can make a sizeable contribution to the fundraising efforts and make the dream of having a community pool and gym a reality.’
The walk on Sunday 11th May is open to both walkers and runners who will tackle a 10 mile route around the island. A five mile route is also an option for those wanting a shorter option.
‘It’s a route that allows participants to see the very best that Alderney has to offer and always attracts walkers and runners of all ages,’ said Mr Paris.
Sure’s customer experience director Charlotte Dunsterville said it was important for the company to support all of the islands it operates in. As well as sponsoring the event, Sure has also donated a number of prizes for a fundraising raffle and Phil Marquis, Sure’s head of service delivery, is also taking part in the 10 mile run.
‘Alderney and its residents are very important to Sure and so we didn’t hesitate to get involved in the Sure Coast Race. We were extremely impressed by the efforts of islanders to build a community swimming pool and gym and hope that Sure’s sponsorship of this fundraising event goes some way to making it happen as soon as possible,’ she said.
