The Itex Walk 2012

Registration for the 2013 Itex Rotary Walk is now open and organisers hope that walkers will sign up early as a way of getting fit and getting rid of those excess Christmas pounds.

The walk saw a record number of registrations in 2012, which totalled 615. By launching the registration over a month earlier than in previous years, organisers hope to encourage even higher numbers this year – particularly attracting walkers who have never considered undertaking the challenge before.

Richard Parker, Chairman of the walk organising committee explains:

“Taking more exercise and losing weight are unsurprisingly the most common resolutions every new year. Walking is one of the easiest forms of exercise – it costs nothing and is accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels. We would not recommend anyone to undertake the Itex Rotary walk without training. With five months until the walk there is ample time to train even for those ‘seldom-walkers’ out there”.

An impressive £51,745 was raised in 2012 with nine local charities benefitting from the funds. The monies are now being used to support specific projects or to purchase equipment. The Walk organisers would like to raise similar amounts in 2013. Richard adds:

“We are always amazed at the generosity of the Guernsey public. There are so many worthwhile causes needing support and we are delighted that the walk plays its part in local fundraising activities.”

The walk takes place on Saturday 8 June. Registration can be completed online on the walk website www.itexwalk.gg/walk/registration. Registration and sponsorship forms are also downloadable from the site or can be requested by calling 710881. The website also contains tips regarding training programmes and other useful information on how best to prepare for the 38.5 mile challenge.
