A new charity fun run has been launched by Guernsey Mind.
Sponsored by BWCI Group, the 10k fun run will take place on the August Bank Holiday, Monday, 25 August.
The aim of the run is to raise funds to help support Guernsey Mind’s work in reducing the stigma attached to mental illness and to highlight the important role exercise can play in helping to have a healthy mind.
The run is being supported by the Guernsey Athletics Club (GIAAC) and the KGV and registration and race entry is free.
Guernsey Mind chairman, John Curran, said runners of any ability are being encouraged to take part in the event. Businesses are also being encouraged to enter teams of four in the event.
“We’d like to encourage runners to get 10 sponsors each giving £10 for running 10 kilometres.
“Guernsey Mind is all about promoting a positive attitude to mental health and we’re hoping this run will assist us to raise awareness of the issues. There remains a real hurdle for some people in admitting they need help. However one in four islanders will at some point experience poor mental health.
“We’re hoping this run will assist us to continue to make a difference in the lives of those with mental illnesses and broaden the island’s understanding of the issues.”
All those signing up to run will receive a race pack including a t-shirt, water bottle and race bag all of which has been kindly sponsored by BWCI. It will also include a sponsorship form. There will also be shorter runs for those looking for an easier challenge.
“In the lead up to the run, with the support of the Guernsey Press, we will be running a series of articles tracking the progress of some ‘volunteers’ who will be trained by Lee Merrien so they should be in peak condition as well as offering tips and advice on how to promote good mental health.”
Alison Hawkins from BWCI said: “Many local employers are beginning to understand the importance of fostering a mentally healthy workforce and are becoming active in reducing the discrimination and stigma surrounding mental health at work. We are a very strong supporter of Guernsey Mind and are delighted to have the opportunity to sponsor and get involved with such an exciting event.”
Guernsey Athletics’ Alun Williams said: “We have a busy athletics schedule over the summer and a 10k road race which supports such a worthwhile cause is a great addition to our programme There is a very clear link between exercise and positive mental health. Athletes will be aware of that every time that they run as it is such a rapid and effective way of relieving stress. We’re pleased to be able to assist Guernsey Mind with its efforts.”
