SARK’S Avenue will be brighter than ever this Christmas thanks to a £5,000 donation from Sure.
The island’s Christmas lights, put up each year by staff from Sark Electricity, were becoming worn and broken and there was doubt they would survive this year’s festive period.
Sure has stepped in to buy a new set of lights, including two 8m illuminations of Christmas trees with gifts, for islanders to enjoy.
‘The lights in The Avenue were donated many years ago and were getting very old, with many having died. The guys from the power station, who put them up each year, said we might get one more year out of them but it was doubtful,’ said Alan Jackson, vice president of the Sark Chamber of Commerce.
‘We are absolutely delighted that Sure has made this generous donation which means we can now be confident we will have an amazing display this year.’
Mr Jackson added that the new lights would be complemented by some of the remaining working ones to produce a sparkling display all the way down The Avenue.
Eddie Saints, Sure’s chief executive, said the telecommunications company was very happy to be providing its first major sponsorship to an initiative in Sark.
‘Sure is committed to supporting the communities it serves and the smaller islands of Herm, Sark and Alderney are equally important to us. We hope that islanders in Sark enjoy their new lights and wish everyone on the island a very Merry Christmas.’
The lights will be switched on this evening (13December).
