The Guernsey Sports Commission welcomes everybody to join them in their third Sports Seafront Sunday which is due to take place this Sunday 15th June.
The Commission will be joined by over 15 different sports clubs and associations on the day and from midday a great showcase of sport on the seafront awaits.
St. Peter Port will play host to the finish of the Half Marathon which will be just outside the Tourist Information Office. From 12-noon the Guernsey Velo Club will work alongside the Guernsey Island Amateur Athletics Club (GIAAC) to utilise the L shaped race course, from Albert Monument to Crown Pier, to run a number of races. Spectators will witness eight cycling races in total, which will consist of both junior & senior riders tackling the fast technical course in an anti-clockwise direction. In between the various cycle races the GIAAC will be running four races consisting of both junior and senior races, but all runners will complete the circuit in clockwise direction.
15 sports associations will also be part of our Sports Sunday event as they will be present on Albert Pier from 12-noon offering you a chance to try their sport. Oliver Tracey, Marketing Officer from the Commission said “we have had a great response from sports clubs and associations this year and with the great variety of activities and sports on offer there promises to be something for everyone”.
Sports that will feature on Albert Pier include Basketball, Darts, Fencing, Football, Hockey, Rugby, Squash and Triathlon. Staff from the Sports Commission will also be offering young people the chance to join other Street Sports participants in our giant 25m inflatable football pitch.
You will get your chance try Fencing this year and there will be opportunities for both young ‘musketeers’ and adults to try the sport. Meyrick Simmonds from the Guernsey Union D’Escrime encourages you to come to our event as he highlighted “we will be showcasing our sport with individual and team bouts at Foil, Epée and Sabre. We will also be allowing young ‘musketeers’ a chance to try their skills with foam weapons in complete safety, and supervised by our experienced coaches. Come down and join us, watch our youngsters duel in the sun, and demonstrate a sport for all ages!”.
The Guernsey Football Association also encourage you to join them on Albert Pier on Sunday as they highlighted it is a great event for people to try out sports and physical activities. Etienne Le Prevost, Football Development Assistant at the Association, said “sport is all about having fun and enjoying being physically active. It’s great for us to have the opportunity to provide many people with an opportunity to play football, from people who have never kicked a ball before to those that play at the highest level – everybody can enjoy in”.
Albert Pier will also play host to the Guernsey Hockey Club and they are looking forward to supporting us on one of our biggest events of the year. Sally Bushell said “Guernsey Hockey is pleased to support the Commission at the Seafront Sunday event and hope that everyone comes along to have a go at the hockey obstacle course, a fun course for all the
family. This is a great opportunity to have a go at lots of different sports in a beautiful setting”.
Martin Watts will be joined by a few of his coaches and fellow players from the Guernsey Squash & Racketball association as they will also be present on Albert Pier. Martin said “come and give squash and racket ball a go, it’s fun, it’s easy to learn, and it’s a good way of getting fit”.
Anyone interested in perfecting their Rugby skills should also join Guernsey Rugby on the seafront for a number of skill challenges, passing, speed and evasion drills. Activities on offer are suitable for everybody and Charles McHugh, Chairman of the Guernsey Rugby Academy, said “rugby can be enjoyed in many forms, street rugby skills are challenging
and fun, why not come down and try out for the Academy team”.
Those keen on shooting a few hoops on the seafront at this unique event will get the chance to play Basketball with the Guernsey Basketball Association (GBA) all afternoon. Whilst there will be coaching opportunities for children between 1.30-2.00pm and 3.00-3.30pm, the afternoon will offer anybody the chance to play on court, either engaging in various shooting competitions, skill challenges or 3 on 3 competitions. Pat Ogier, President of the GBA said “we are delighted to once again be part of Sports Sunday. On the day we will be providing opportunities for people to get some information on what we do and where they can play, provide some coaching and generally get people involved through shooting games and 3 v 3 contests. Our Senior Island squads will be on hand to give advice and coaching tips to anyone that wishes to participate and we welcome anyone to come and try regardless of age or ability. We look forward to seeing everyone on Sunday!”.
For the first time at our Sports Sunday event, Jumping, a fitness activity completed on trampolines will be on offer for both adults and children. Dana and her team from Pure Fun & Fit will will be offering you the chance to try this activity which she highlighted will be lots of fun and she said “It’s a great fun way to stay fit and improves your core strength and once you have tried it you will definitely want to go again!”.
Guernsey Triathlon, supported by the Ana Leaf Foundation and Tri Fitness factory are very pleased to be able to showcase their sport for the first time in a static display on a Seafront Sunday. They hope that lots of members of the public will join them and have a go at their short fitness challenge which will also be on Albert Pier.
You will also be given your chance to win a football as part of a promotion joining us on the Seafront for the first time this year. Dave Chalk, Managing Director of Cimandis Guernsey said “We are delighted that Coca-Cola will be taking the Win A Ball promotion on tour to Guernsey this summer and we hope that it inspires people to get out and get moving. We hope that facilities and friends take the opportunity to come and showcase their football skills with the chance to win a Coca-Cola football”.
