Steve Hogg has been appointed as Chairman of the Skipton Swimarathon, with effect from January 2013, replacing Jeff Kitts who is retiring after 5 years, having enjoyed over 36 years involvement in the event.

Steve is a retired HSBC area manager and is actively involved in a number of local charities. He is a member of the Rotary Club of Guernsey and was the Club’s President in 2010.

Unusually, he is a non-swimmer even though his wife is an accomplished swimmer and swimming referee, but has accepted the challenge of learning to swim in time for the Skipton Swimarathon in October of next year.

As Chairman, Steve said “I want to build on the success of the Skipton Swimarathon as an integral part of Guernsey’s Community calendar and in particular am keen to increase the involvement of primary and secondary schools”.

Retiring Chairman Jeff Kitts has been a high profile supporter of the event, overseeing the appointment of the current prime sponsors Skipton International three years ago which has coincided with a turnaround in participant numbers and a new, more family and fun oriented approach to the planning of the event. Jeff comments, “From the very start we soon realised that we had an event that was going to be successful as it was being enjoyed by the young and the old, those with special needs and those that were champions of the sport.   There was a sense of achievement by them all and at the same time doing their bit raising money in substantial amounts, for those in need throughout the Island.

I am proud to of have done my part but I am immensely proud of the all those that have taken part of the years. I would also like to thank the members of The Lions Club of Guernsey and The Guernsey Round Table who, over the past 36 Years, have worked tirelessly to ensure every year those in real need have been supported in one way and another by the Swimarathon.”

In January, the Skipton Swimarathon will be inviting local charities to submit their proposals to become the 2013 lead beneficiary of the funds raised.  The Skipton Swimarathon is held annually at the Beau Sejour Leisure Centre in October.

For 2012, the main beneficiary was Guernsey’s Cardiac Action Group, who are pioneering a life saving initiative by purchasing and installing a number of public access defibrillators around the island.  The event is now in its 37th year.
