SUPPORT given to Young People Guernsey by the Sure Community Foundation is already helping local youngsters.

The foundation, which aims to help local charities using money donated by the company and by staff through their salary, has supplied YPG’s new centre, The Hub, with a computer, printer, mobile phones and broadband. It also covered the costs of offices desks and chairs as well as other pieces of furniture in a donation totalling £5,000.

‘As the island’s largest telecommunications company, we are delighted that we can use our expertise to help YPG create a centre that meets the needs of its staff and its users,’ said Sure chief executive Eddie Saints.

‘We are delighted to hear that within the first month of opening that the technology we have supplied and installed is already bringing benefits.’

Chair of YPG Jane St Pier said the support from Sure was invaluable.

‘Our two staff Charlie Cox and Josh Smale are out and about all of the time and so it was vital that they could be contacted whenever someone needed our services. To have the mobile phones supplied to us means that we don’t have to worry about that cost and can use the money elsewhere,’ she said.

Mrs St Pier said the computer and printer, which had been donated by Sure, were available for users of The Hub and she was surprised by demand.

‘We tend to think that everyone has access to the internet these days but that’s not the case. We have already had some teenage girls coming in to use the computer to look for part-time jobs and youngsters using it to research for their homework,’ she said.

‘That provides us with an opportunity to talk to them about other issues such as safety, saving money, using the internet carefully and often allows them to ask us questions which they may be worried about asking a parent, teacher or friend.’

She added that every penny not spent on physical items was one more they could use on helping young people in the island.

‘We really didn’t want to spend money on assets and due to the generosity of companies like Sure, we have been able to set up The Hub with very little cost, which ensures that we can use the money we have raised to providing the wide range of services we do.’

Mr Saints said the Sure Community Foundation was always interested in hearing from charities or organisations requiring help and encouraged them to apply at
