The Temp Desk raises funds for Bridge 2 Sri Lanka project
Isle News, 19 June 2009 – Through running an awareness campaign about Bridge 2 Sri Lanka for its temps, The Temp Desk has raised £1,500 for the charity.
During National Temporary Workers Week (1-5 June) Poppy Byrom, who works at The Temp Desk, contacted all the temps and gave personal insight about the charity’s work in an effort to win their support. Miss Byrom has just returned from volunteering on one of the charity’s projects and had already succeeded in securing a £1,000 donation from The Temp Desk.
On her visit to Sri Lanka Miss Byrom helped with the building of a house for a family who have suffered two serious road accidents, the first leaving the daughter with brain damage and the second severely injuring the father who is no longer able to work as a stonemason.
The Temp Desk guaranteed it would donate £1,000 to Bridge 2 Sri Lanka to cover some of the costs of completing the house and, in addition, for every temp that pledged their support for the charity the firm increased its donation in order to buy essential items for the family.
The level of support from the temps has meant that The Temp Desk has raised enough additional money to fund a well, a toilet, beds and a vegetable garden for the family.
One temp, upon learning about the work of the charity, was so inspired that she donated £100 of her own money to Bridge 2 Sri Lanka.
Vicki Eppelein, The Temp Desk Manager, said the scheme had been a great way to celebrate the work of their temps.
“The level of support shown by our temps was heartening. While some of them had heard of Bridge 2 Sri Lanka before and were happy to sign up, the feedback from others, who were unaware of the charity’s work, was very positive. Having Poppy around to talk them through the charity’s work meant everyone was enthusiastic about our support.
“We aim to keep in contact with the family through Sarah Griffith at Bridge 2 Sri Lanka and we hope to be able to help the charity in the future. Poppy has already hinted that she is keen to work on another project in Sri Lanka.”
The Temp Desk was launched by OSA Recruitment in 2004 to specialise in the recruitment of temporary workers, who are often used by businesses looking to cover holidays, sickness, maternity leave or busy periods.
