THE first night of the KPMG Touch Super League saw the Titans win both its games.
Playing for the first time at the sport’s new home at KGV and with a new sponsor in the form of KPMG in place, the first league of the season saw the three teams taking part each scoring touchdowns.
‘Passion for the sport has meant that we have had to increase the number of opportunities for players to play at a competitive level. We originally started with a 12-week summer league, quickly added an eight-week autumn league to finish the season and then in 2012, added the touch super league as the season opener,’ said Guernsey Touch chair Katrina Bray.
‘The idea is that it provides players with an opportunity to compete at a more competitively even standard. Whereas the KPMG Summer and Autumn Touch Leagues have teams entering, the KPMG Touch Super League sees players enter as individuals and then divided into teams of relatively equal standard. The overall aim is that players learn more which they then take back to their own teams.’
Titans and Raiders were the first teams to face each other with Titans proving the stronger of the two. Two touchdowns from coach Ollie Ward and one each from Dom Paige, Alex Burt, Steve Teasdale and Mark Bristow gave them a comfortable 6 – 2 win over Raiders who saw touchdowns from Adam Greening and Charly Alston.
Having already played for 40 minutes, Titans then faced Chargers and the scoreline was a little closer. Burt scored two, Ward and Paige crossed into the touchdown zone once with Titan’s fifth coming from Laura Mitchell. Chargers scored three with Carly Parrott taking the opportunity to get some game time in before she goes travelling for six months and the others from Alec Bailey and Tristan Boscher.
‘It was a great start to what has already been a fantastic year for the sport. Securing a three year sponsorship deal with KPMG and finding a new home provides the sport with really solid foundations on which to continue building,’ said Bray.
