Seasoned athletes from the Guernsey Triathlon Club (GTC) will be facing their Jersey counterparts in St Helier this weekend, Sunday 29 June, in the inter-insular triathlon.
This event has been taking place between the islands since the local club formed in 1987 and is sponsored in both islands by the Ana Leaf Foundation. The previous inter-insular was held in Guernsey during 2012 and the overall winners were the home side. This year the triathlon also doubles up as the first event in the club’s selection process for next year’s Island Games squad.
Guernsey is sending over a number of experienced triathletes including recent Deva Triathlon race winner James Travers. We have strength in depth with Tim Andrews, Richard Stapley, Martin Chapman, Dave Crosland, Bob Guilbert and Alan Rowe. Plenty of our other men are capable of mixing it up for the team places as well.
Mark Naftel, president of the Guernsey Triathlon Club knows that his team will need to be on top form for this weekend’s encounter but is looking forward to the challenge. ‘We have recently seen James take the win at the Deva Tri in Cheshire and last week junior Max Thornton won his age group at Windsor tri, so we know we have some great talent.
‘The club has had a great season so far with the Ana Leaf Winter Duathlon series, a hugely successful novice event followed by our first open water triathlon at the beginning of this month. Our triathletes keep proving their mettle and we’re looking forward to showcasing this talent to the Jersey team. We’re hoping to see some great times in the inter-insular, but equally hoping to strengthen our relations with the Jersey Triathlon Club, who are now also sponsored by the Ana Leaf Foundation.
‘This event doubles up as the first qualifier in the selection process for of our Island Games squad, so our guys have everything to go for.
‘Guernsey has a strong squad racing Jersey, we have a total of 33 local athletes entered so far, with entries still open. For the ladies Pippa Inderwick and Magda Puzio will both need to be strong to beat the Jersey girls, but have a good chance.’
Nine members from the Guernsey Triathlon Club – James Gower, Simon March, Phillip Le Pelley, Luke Walton, Ian Le Pelley, Gail King, Nikki Neal, Viki Marr and Luke Winberg – competed in last year’s Island Games in Bermuda.
Hayley de Putron, trustee of the Ana Leaf Foundation said; ‘We are continually amazed by the quality of the Guernsey triathletes. We hope our financial support helps provide them with opportunities to develop and nurture their skills even further. Competing against Jersey is a great platform and we would like to wish them all the best of luck.’
