‘Captives Uncovered’ is an initiative from Barclays Wealth and Investment Management to offer frank insights into the captives sector from industry experts.
Featuring a dedicated website and a LinkedIn networking group, ‘Captives Uncovered’ aims to help Captives professionals exchange views and information online and learn from industry experts.
Six new interviews have just been published on the Barclays website, with expert opinion from captive managers based in Guernsey, the Isle of Man, Bermuda and the Cayman Islands. Simon Phillips and Colleen McHugh, from Barclays’ own captive insurance team, also feature.
“Putting together these interviews has provided valuable insight into the opportunities and challenges from across key captive jurisdictions,” said Mr Phillips, who is Head of Captive Insurance for Barclays Wealth & Investment Management.
“Working with experts in each jurisdiction, it has been fascinating to see our correspondents picking up similar trends in each jurisdiction, whilst also recognising more localised themes.
“Regulation, such as Solvency II, has been a main focus, as have returns, with more and more captives looking at the options for increasing the yield on their assets within acceptable risk parameters and broader cost efficiencies.”
Ms McHugh, captive insurance investment adviser at Barclays Wealth and Investment Management said: ““Investing doesn’t mean that the captive has to take significant extra risk with its capital, as there are different investment strategies available depending upon their risk preference. What it does mean for a captive is an increased time commitment on their part to examine their investment options.
“Captives are outside their comfort zone and the pressure is on. It’s created a conundrum –assets need to generate a higher return but at the end of the day what is the ultimate objective of the captive insurer?
“It has been really interesting to explore some of these issues with our experts and I am looking forward to expanding the campaign into new areas and tackling new topics.”
Captive managers, advisors and other people connected with the sector can also join in the topical discussions by joining the ‘Captives Uncovered’ LinkedIn group.
“We are keen to provide a platform for people in the captives industry to network and share knowledge,” said Mr Phillips.
The first four experts to feature in the series are:
John Neal, Managing Director of Symphony Management Limited, Bermuda
Charles Scott, Managing Director of Alternative Risk Management, Guernsey
Derek Patience, Head of Isle of Man Office, Marsh Management Services
Kevin Poole, Client Services Director, Kane, Cayman Islands
