Waitrose has appointed Gary Grace as buying adviser of fresh produce in the Channel Islands. Mr Grace will be working across Guernsey and Jersey, supporting the local branches and island producers.
Mr Grace will bring with him 27 years’ experience of working in retail and buying produce for Waitrose in the UK. Most recently he worked within the supermarket’s meat, fish and poultry departments.
He has already worked extensively in the Channel Islands, having played an instrumental role in the set-up of the five Waitrose branches. Part of this role was in managing the supply of fresh seafood from the Channel Islands to the shops.
Working closely with local producers of meat, poultry, fish, dairy and vegetables to help grow their businesses, Mr Grace will look at a whole range of opportunities, including making the most of seasonal flushes of produce. Key elements of his role will include looking at the seasonality of produce and planning ahead to ensure the stores continue to stock the freshest and highest quality local products, as well as making sure these products are promoted to customers in the right way.
Mr Grace said: “I’m thrilled to be taking on this new role and to be working even more closely with our five branches across Guernsey and Jersey. The Channel Islands are renowned for yielding high quality produce and I’m looking forward to developing successful long-standing relationships with a vast array of local traders.”
Neil Ovenden, area manager of Waitrose in the Channel Islands, said: “We are really pleased to announce Gary’s appointment and as we move into our second year of trading in the Channel Islands he will be a valuable addition as we strengthen our relationships with Guernsey and Jersey producers.”
